“FILMING WITH ANIMALS”

Our November special event lecture from the DCBS Program-Wide Live Lecture series, DC BUZZ!

Hosted by Producing Instructor Jennifer Miller, with Special Guest Jennifer Mohr from Universal Studios and Atlanta Film Animals.

This is a live online event, taking place on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22, beginning at 8:30pm est 

(7:30pm cst, 6:30pm mst, 5:30pm pst).

LECTURE OBJECTIVE:

Guidelines, information, and tips for student filmmakers who are interested in filming with domestic and/or exotic animals for classroom-based productions and/or independent film and video projects outside of the University setting.

SUMMARY:

This session will share information for planning and executing your film, video, or still photography productions using animals of all kinds! We’ll discuss how to safely and professionally work with animals and animal trainers/handlers. Learn how to maximize your production time and experience with animals.

Some of the topics discussed will be; preproduction for animals, paperwork / releases / permitting, directing animals and time management, communicating with trainers, costs of animal rentals/use, and safety on set. We will also discuss the American Humane Organization’s steps and regulations for gaining the “No Animals Were Harmed” approval for your credits.

The session will end with “Door Prize” drawing giveaways and an open Q&A, where students may ask questions live. Safety planning handouts and other training materials may also be provided to those attending.

PRESENTERS:

Host Jennifer Miller is the Course Director for the Producing course within the Digital Cinematography program. Jennifer has worked in the planning and production phases of multiple projects utilizing domestic and exotic animals.

Recent production examples include various full-sized Alligators, utilized on feature film Fox Hunt Drive and National Geographic/Disney TV-series The Right Stuff.

Special guest Jennifer Mohr,

represents Universal Studios and the animal talent organization Atlanta Film Animals. Jennifer is an expert trainer and handler of all kinds of creatures for both theatre-based show productions as well as many film projects taking place across the country.
