Full Grad Spotlight: Matthew Roth (freelance writer and director)

DCBS Buzz this month will be hosted by Kyle Frazer C.D for Electronic Field Production. Kyle will be interviewing with freelance writer and director and Full Sail Alumni Matthew Roth.

They will be discussing life after graduation, shooting your first couple features, film festivals and making low budget features. Five Piece is Matthew’s most recent film and is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

Matthew’s Bio

Chicago, IL native, Matthew Roth attended Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL to pursue filmmaking, learning all aspects of the craft in under two years. Upon receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Film, Roth embarked to Los Angeles, CA shortly after where he worked on numerous productions. One year later, he raised money for his first feature film The Man Who Collected Food which went on to win numerous awards at various film festivals and find distribution though Media Blasters.

Then, while seeking financing for other projects, Roth had a chance meeting with Writer/Director Martin Donovan (Apartment Zero, Death Becomes Her) whom he worked with for the next few years, developing scripts, filming sessions with actors, and learning even more about the art of film.

Roth then decided to make his next film and wrote one with a small budget in mind, Five Piece. With a cast consisting mainly of actors Roth met through Donovan, he shot Five Piece on a shoestring budget and after a successful festival run, found distribution through Cinema Epoch.

Five Piece Summary

When a metal band approaches a once-in-a-lifetime shot at success – a contest with a prize of $1,000,000 and a recording contract – all five players stand to finally escape marginal lives of subsisting and hoping in Hollywood.

But as the hours count down to the contest, their gifted but troubled star member, drummer Brandon, becomes stranger and more belligerent.

Unknown to the rest of the band, he lives with dissociative identity disorder, and the four other distinct personalities he carries within him will now present the greatest battle that he, and his band, has ever faced.
